After the inept response to hurricane Katrina last summer, the U.S. government found itself under fire. Under fire.
The local police have been under fire for not being able to catch the serial killer. Under fire. What does it mean?

“Under fire” means to be criticized. This idiom alludes to being within firing range of enemy guns.

Review questions:
You want someone to soften the way they speak to you. What should they do?
Answer: They should tone down.
If someone is always on task and gets a job done quickly, what are they on?
Answer: They’re on the ball.
