Introduction to the Listening Room

Welcome to the Listening Room! What can you do here? You can improve your listening and comprehension skills! Very often (too often sometimes) teachers (especially foreign English teachers) are asked the same few questions over and over again:

• How can I improve my spoken English?
• How can I improve my written English?
• How can I improve my listening skills?
• How can I improve my reading comprehension?
• I watch English movies every week, but I cannot understand what they say. How can I improve?
• I try to listen to BBC and VOA on the radio everyday but they speak too fast and I cannot understand anything. What should I do?

Well, unfortunately, there is no easy way to learn a new language. You need to work hard and practice as much as possible. "The Listening Room" provides material to help you practice and improve your listening and comprehension skills. While you're at it, you can also improve your vocabulary and even your spoken English if you work a little hard. You will find a number of podcasts here from various shows (courtesy of the Center for Educational Research and Englishcaster), all of them aimed at improving your English skills.

What are podcasts?

Podcasts are sort of like radio shows except they are released as mp3 files on the internet, so you can listen to them whenever you want!

What podcasts can I find here?

In "The Listening Room", you can find podcasts aimed at improving various aspects of your English. These podcasts have been graciously provided by Englishcaster and the Center for Educational Research (in Los Angeles, California). Some podcasts are primarily for the purpose of improving your listening and comprehension skills, some are for teaching you idioms and slang while others are for giving you grammar lessons among other things. Each podcast is accompanied by a transcript or preview of the show.
